Designed to work on the Newcastle Quay line which was a mile long but had a tunnel in a hairpin so that both portals faced west - this proved to be an operating nightmare when using steam locomotives, partly because of the curvature and gradients, but also because when the wind blew from the west, steam and smoke was liable to get trapped in the tunnel. These two electrics were built by the NER to operate this line which they did for 60 years.
